The Marangu route, nicknamed the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the oldest and most established trail on Kilimanjaro. Its main distinction is that it offers sleeping huts in dormitory-style accommodations, a feature many find more comfortable than camping. The 6-day version is highly recommended over the 5-day option, as it includes a crucial extra day for acclimatization at Horombo Hut. This day allows for a “climb high, sleep low” excursion towards Mawenzi Peak, which significantly improves the comfort and success rate of the climb. While the scenery is less varied because the ascent and descent are on the same path, it offers a classic, steady climb through beautiful rainforest and moorland.
